Summary
Methods to simulate colloid suspension structure, dynamics, and rheology are presented and distinguished by whether the solvent is modeled by a continuum or by meso-scale particles, and whether or not a mesh is used. The unmeshed/continuum solvent methods include various forms of Stokesian Dynamics, while the meshed continuum solvent methods include the Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian method and the Immersed Boundary Method. Mesoscopic particles are used on a mesh in the Lattice–Boltzmann (LB) method and are mesh-free in Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD). These and other methods are reviewed and guidance provided on which ones are preferred in various situations. For spherical hard particles at high concentrations, without inertia, when accurate treatment of hydrodynamic interactions is needed, versions of Stokesian dynamics set benchmarks for accuracy and efficiency. Other methods become preferable depending on the speed needed for computation, the numbers of particles to be simulated, how well hydrodynamic interactions need to be modeled, whether Brownian motion or particle inertia is important, the shapes and deformability of the particles, the complexity of the flow domain, and whether the solvent is non-Newtonian. Information in this chapter indicates how well the different methods perform in their present state of development.

The federal government has supported and continues to support or share in the support, financially and technically, of several regional pest management programs. Implicit in continued federal support is the concept that the benefits of the program to society exceed the governmental portion of the costs. As these programs are evaluated and consideration is given to discontinuing federal support, improved estimates of program benefits, or costs of discontinuing, are needed.
The objective of this study was to identify and quantify the expected effects in terms of agricultural output, insecticide use, and production costs of discontinuing a regional boll weevil suppression program on the Texas High Plains. Results of this study are useful to governmental decision makers, local producers, environmentalists and economists.

We demonstrate that deposition patterns formed during drying droplets of aqueous protein solutions are complex, characteristic, and highly reproducible. Substrate, buffer as well as protein type are important factors largely influencing the patterned structure. Specifically, multiple growth zones in what we refer to as “soccer ball pattern” are formed when a droplet of albumin solution in sodium bicarbonate buffer is dried. Each growth zone has periodically patterned, concentric ringed structures surrounding a core at the center. Different macroscopic patterns are also found for streptavidin, fibrinogen, IgG antibody as well as rhodamine B base and polystyrene beads when droplets of their aqueous solutions are dried on the substrates with different degrees of hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity. Furthermore, distinguishable deposition patterns are formed in drying droplets of aqueous protein solutions containing albumin and fibrinogen at different ratios, suggesting that even the relative abundance of multiple proteins influences the deposition patterns. Since the protein pattern is reproducible for a given protein and variable among different proteins, the protein patterns from drying droplets might be useful to potentially identify a given protein under specific conditions.

Narcomedusae are a small and mostly oceanic group of hydromedusae whose tentacle morphology and comportment sets them off behaviourally and perhaps ecologically from most other medusae. Their tentacles are relatively few in number (2–40), stiff, and noncontractile, with points of insertion located well above the bell margin. Eleven species representing eight narcomedusan genera (Aegina, Aeginura, an undescribed aeginid, Cunina, Pegantha, Solmaris, Solmissus, and Solmundella) were observed and collected in situ in the NW Atlantic, Arctic and Antarctic, using scuba and manned submersibles. In life, the tentacles of narcomedusae are nearly always held upwards over the bell or projected laterally. The major prey were other gelatinous zooplankton, especially salps and doliolids. In the laboratory, these relatively large prey were caught on the tentacles which bend inward and coil at the tips to bring food to the mouth. By extending the tentacles perpendicular to the swimming path, these medusae achieve a relatively large encounter area, thus increasing the probability of contact with prey, for the amount of protein invested in tentacles.

The effects of finite gap and various dilute solution properties on the previously studied purely elastic Taylor-Couette instability reported by Muller et al. (1989) and Larson et al. (1990) are investigated. The dilute solution properties which we consider are the ratio of the second to the first normal stress coefficient, ψ2/ψ1, and the ratio of the solvent to the polymer contribution to the shear viscosity, S. Linear stability predictions for the flow of an Oldroyd-B fluid are presented over a wide range of Deborah number, De, gap ratio, ε, and S. In addition, the Oldroyd-B model is modified to include second normal stress differences, and new stability predictions are presented for small negative and small positive ψ2/ψ1. Both the critical conditions and changes in the flow structure are presented. It is demonstrated that finite-gap effects are stabilizing even for relatively small gap ratios (0 < ε < 0.35). Furthermore, it is shown that there are two possible flow structures which can be chosen near the onset of instability: a standing wave structure (i.e. radially propagating vortices) or a travelling wave (i.e. vortices propagating up or down the coaxial cylinders). However, the strength and both the axial and radial dimensions of these vortices depend markedly on the gap, with both dimensions decreasing as the gap ratio increases. Thus, the number of vortices filling the gap increases with the gap ratio.
In a second study, we show that the instability is sensitive to the presence of second normal stress differences. Positive second normal stress differences are shown to be destabilizing, while negative differences are strongly stabilizing. Furthermore, when both finite-gap effects and small negative second normal stress differences are included, the predicted gap dependence of the critical De is in good agreement with previous measurements on the flow of a dilute polyisobutylene solution. Finally, we present new measurements of the critical values of the De for a series of dilute, viscous polystyrene solutions, for which ψ2 was found to be near zero. We find that as the polymer concentration increases (and therefore S decreases) the critical Deborah number decreases, in qualitative agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Multiple scenarios have been discovered by which laminar flow undergoes a transition to turbulence in Newtonian fluids. Here we show in non-Newtonian fluids a transition sequence to ‘elastic turbulence’ due to elasticity from polymers, with negligible inertia. Multiple dynamic states are found linking the base flow to ‘elastic turbulence’ in the flow between a rotating and stationary disk, including circular and spiral rolls. Also, a surprising progression from apparently ‘chaotic’ flow to periodic flow and then to ‘elastic turbulence’ is found. These transitions are found in experiments where either shear stress or shear rate is incrementally increased and then held at fixed values; the modes found following stable base flow are ‘stationary ring’, ‘competing spirals’, ‘multi-spiral chaotic’ and ‘spiral bursting’ modes, followed then by ‘elastic turbulence’. Each mode has a distinct rheological signature, and accompanying imaging of the secondary-flow field (simultaneous with rheological measurement) reveals kinematic structures including stationary and time-dependent rolls. The time-dependent changes in the secondary-flow structure can be related to the time-dependent viscosity in the case of several of the modes. Finally, the effect of polymer concentration on the transitional pathway modes is studied systematically.

The predictions of a general “hierarchical model” for the rheology of general mixtures of linear and branched polymers are compared to experimental data for well-defined long-chain branched polymers. For a wide range of branched polymer melts, which include star-linear blends, H-polymers, and comb polymers, the predictions of the model agree well with experimental data. We apply the hierarchical model to metallocene-catalyzed polyethylenes (mPEs), in which the branched structures are generated by a Monte Carlo method based on the known reaction kinetics. The hierarchical model captures the shape of the curves of viscoelastic moduli vs. frequency of mPEs well and predicts accurately the effect of long chain branching on the linear viscoelastic properties. The quantitative agreement of the hierarchical model prediction with experimental data of well-defined long-chain branched polymers and mPEs shows that information on branching structure could be inferred from rheological measurements on combinatorial sets of mixtures of an unknown branched with different combinations of linear polymers.
